Communities to Benefit from Company and Employee Donations

EDISON, New Jersey, May 18, 2017 – The Edison Plant of LyondellBasell, one of the world’s largest plastics, chemical and refining companies, recently announced donations totaling $12,551 to the United Way of Central Jersey.

“United Way mobilizes the caring power of communities to advance the common good; LyondellBasell is proud to be a part of their vital work,” said Bob Patel, LyondellBasell CEO and chairman of the management board. “I am grateful for our employees across the U.S. who demonstrated their tremendous generosity during the company’s annual United Way campaign. Through their volunteer efforts and financial contributions, our employees exemplify our company’s mission to be a good neighbor in the communities where we operate.”

One of the programs United Way of Central Jersey supports is the Nurse Family Partnership program (NFP). Studies show access to quality early education, even before pre-school, can dramatically alter the direction of a child’s life in a positive manner. Through NFP, the United Way of Central Jersey provides intensive in-home services delivered by registered nurses for high-risk first-time mothers and their infants to the age of two.  Children who participate in the NFP program had higher IQs and fewer behavior problems by the age of seven, 23% fewer injuries through age two and were hospitalized less often and for fewer days.  NFP children also demonstrate a 38% reduction in language delay and a 23 percent increase in immunization rates.

“LyondellBasell and its employees continue to have an effect on the community though their support of United Way,” said Gloria Aftanski, United Way of Central Jersey’s President and Chief Professional Officer. “Their commitment to building healthy communities helps make a difference for some of the most fragile children and their families in Middlesex and Somerset Counties.”

In 2016, LyondellBasell held United Way campaigns at 23 company sites across the U.S. and raised a total of $2.65 million.

"It is a honor to support organizations that touches the lives of so many,” said David Schrutka, Edison site manager. “Our employees are truly proud to contribute to United Way many times both financially and physically to local agencies.”
