This year, I had the honor of serving as the executive sponsor of Global Care Day, our company’s worldwide day of service when employees, contractors, friends and families volunteer to improve and advance the communities where we operate. Global Care Day has been a significant part of LyondellBasell’s charitable efforts for over two decades. This year’s day of giving was different and especially meaningful, as we solely focused our volunteer efforts on food insecurity. The adverse impacts of COVID-19 have led to many families and individuals struggling to put food on their tables. Through our day of service, we were able to build on the $1.3 million donation LyondellBasell made to food banks globally in April to help combat the hunger crisis which has been deepened by this pandemic.
Over 80 LyondellBasell sites around the world participated in various projects to help feed communities where employees live and work. Some hosted mobile food drives, built pop-up food pantries, delivered food to the sick and elderly, collected and donated non-perishable food and packaged food at their local food banks. Additionally, some of our sites took on virtual efforts such as making charitable contributions to local food banks to putting on a virtual charity run to support a local day care center for children. With all of our projects, employees maintained social distancing measures to remain safe.
I had the opportunity to volunteer at the Houston Food Bank, America’s largest food bank in distribution, leading hunger relief in 18 southeast Texas counties. I was tasked with cleaning, inspecting and sorting food that would be distributed to a network of 1,500 community organizations serving families in need. While working in the food bank warehouse, it was impactful to see the amount of food donated and to know these resources will touch so many people facing hunger.
At LyondellBasell, giving back to our communities and helping our neighbors in need is deeply ingrained in our DNA and culture. Our employees’ passion for making a difference has fueled our unwavering commitment to improve the quality of life in areas where we operate. This year’s Global Care Day has truly been remarkable. I am so proud that our LYB team had the opportunity to help communities all over the world and assist with combating hunger, especially with so many hurting from this global pandemic.
