LyondellBasell Recognized for Outstanding Workplace Safety and Innovation

Six LyondellBasell facilities were recently recognized for exceptional safety performance with the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers’ (AFPM) 2020 Annual Safety Award. The award is designed to promote safe operations in the refining and petrochemical industries and recognize facilities with outstanding occupational and process safety records.

“Congratulations to the LyondellBasell 2020 AFPM award winners,” said Kim Foley, senior vice president, Healthy, Safety and Environment, Global Engineering and Turnarounds. “This recognition is a reflection of our employees working every day to be the best operated and most valued company in our industry.”

AFPM’s Elite Gold Award recognizes facilities with safety performance in the top one percentile who have demonstrated superior and consistent safety performance, program innovation and leadership. The LyondellBasell Elite Gold Award recipients include:

  • Chocolate Bayou Polymers Plant, TX
  • Corpus Christi Operations, TX
  • Matagorda Complex, TX
  • Tuscola Plant, IL
  • Victoria Plant, TX

Additionally, AFPM this year introduced its inaugural Innovation Awards to recognize unique and innovative programs or practices that effectively improve the site’s safety performance for either occupational or process safety. LyondellBasell’s facility in Clinton, Iowa, received this award for their continued engagement around process safety, including additional training around life-critical procedures.

“This is a meaningful recognition for our team, and I couldn’t be more proud of them for being the very first recipients of AFPM’s innovation award,” said Yari Hernandez, LyondellBasell Clinton site manager. “Safety is at the cornerstone of everything we do and the most important part of our jobs. This award speaks to our team’s commitment to innovation and passion to look for ways to improve workplace safety.”

LyondellBasell’s Clinton Complex is one of the largest chemical plants in Iowa. In operation more than 50 years, the plant manufactures ethylene, the world’s most widely-used petrochemical. Ethylene serves as building blocks for products such as leak-proof and shatter-proof containers for industrial and household chemicals, packaging that protects our food from spoilage and contamination, and children’s toys that are safe and durable.
