LyondellBasell Continues Support for Local Park

Donation Provides Supplies for Sheldon Lake State Park

The LyondellBasell Channelview Complex presented the Texas Master Naturalist Gulf Coast Chapter with a grant check just in time for the spring planting season. The funds will support on-going programs at Sheldon Lake State Park where Gulf Coast Chapter Members provide regular volunteer hours and support.

Some of the programs include major native prairie and wetlands restoration projects intended to restore native habitat and wildlife. Park officials will also purchase several dump truck loads of top soil to nurture native grass seedlings and rescued grasses before eventual planting in the fields.

"Sustained support by Lyondellbasell of Sheldon Lake State Park is greatly appreciated by Chapter volunteers. This support further enables our weekly volunteer efforts involved in native prairie restoration and outreach activities,” said John Egan, Gulf Coast Master Naturalist. “The result is a better park for all to enjoy and learn more about nature and its great value to the community". 

In addition to the donation, LyondellBasell employees participate in the park’s annual Prairie Plant-a-Thon event in November. More than 100 volunteers from the area plant thousands of plants in the field at Sheldon Lake State Park.

Since the Prairie effort began in 2007, a total of more than 63,000 native plants have been restored to the field with an associated 11,493 volunteer hours expended by the Gulf Coast Chapter and other Master Naturalist Chapter members and volunteers.
