One of three LyondellBasell plants in the Pasadena Industrial District, the Bayport Choate Plant produces propylene oxide (PO), tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), propylene glycol, propylene glycol ethers and tertiary butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP).
PO is an intermediate chemical used to manufacture a number of everyday products, ranging from seat cushions and pet foods to antifreeze, paints and coatings. PO also is used to produce propylene glycol, a basic chemical used in the production of unsaturated polyester resins, of humectants for food products and of solvents used in cosmetics. Another PO co-product, TBA, is used to produce methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE), which is blended into gasoline to enhance octane and reduce vehicle emissions.
The LyondellBasell Bayport Choate Plant sits on 280 acres near the intersection of Bay Area Boulevard and Choate Road and is adjacent to LyondellBasell Bayport Polyolefins. It is close to the cities of Shoreacres, La Porte, Taylor Lake Village, El Lago, Pasadena and the Clear Lake Area of Houston.
